In many European languages the names of the months are based on the Roman calendar and are easy to recognize for foreign language speakers for this reason. However<\/strong>, the Croatian names of the months originate from archaic Slavic words and phrases which depict the changing of the seasons and the different tasks related to those seasons:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Sije\u010danj (January)<\/strong><\/span>

<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n

This month was probably named after the timber-cutting season which begins at that time of year, although other theories of its origin exist too.<\/p>\n

Other (archaic) names for sije\u010danj: malobo\u017ei\u0107njak, pavlov\u0161\u0107ak.<\/p>\n

Velja\u010da (February)<\/strong><\/span>

<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n

According to some sources, the name is probably derived from the word \u2018velja, velji\u2019, (which means longer) to describe the time of year when the days get longer.<\/p>\n

Other (archaic) names for velja\u010da: sve\u010den, veljak, svi\u010dan and others.<\/p>\n

O\u017eujak (March)<\/strong><\/span>

<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n

The weather in March tends to be unpredictable. Hence, its name has been derived from the noun \u2018la\u017e\u2019 (a lie)- o(la)\u017eujak (a lying month).<\/p>\n

Other (archaic) names for o\u017eujak: gregurjev\u0161\u010dak, su\u0161ec, protuletnjak.<\/p>\n

Travanj (April)<\/strong><\/span>

<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n

The origin of its name is easily discerned because the name comes from the noun \u2018trava\u2019 (grass). This truly is one the greenest months of the year.<\/p>\n

Other (archaic) names for travanj: jurjev\u0161\u010dak , traven, mali traven.<\/p>\n

Svibanj (May)<\/strong><\/span>

<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n

\u2018Sviba\u2019 or \u2018svib\u2019 is a plant which blooms in late spring and it boasts beautiful white flowers.<\/p>\n

Other (archaic) names for svibanj: filipov\u010dak, ro\u017enjak, sviben.<\/p>\n

Lipanj (June)<\/strong><\/span>

<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n

Lipanj got its name from the linden tree which blossoms at this time of year.<\/p>\n

Other (archaic) names for lipanj: ivan\u0161\u010dak, klasen, ro\u017eencvet.<\/p>\n

Srpanj (July)<\/strong><\/span>

<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n

Its name tells us that this is the time of year when people use \u2018srpove\u2019 (sickles) for harvest.<\/p>\n

Other (archaic) names for srpanj: jakopov\u0161\u010dak, srpen, mali srpen.<\/p>\n

Kolovoz (August)<\/strong><\/span>

<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n

Like many other months, \u2018kolovoz\u2019 was named to mark the agricultural work that was done at that time of year. While \u2018srpanj\u2019 was named after sickles, the name \u2018kolovoz\u2019 is a combination of two words- kola (cart) and voziti (drive)- because harvest was transported by carts to the storehouses.<\/p>\n

Rujan (September)<\/strong><\/span>

This month got its name to mark the animal-mating season which starts at this time of year. The verb \u2018rjati\u2019 is used to describe the mating calls of the animals which start their love games in September.<\/p>\n

Listopad (October)<\/strong><\/span>

<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n

This is the month when most trees lose their leaves. The word \u2018listopad\u2019 is actually a combination of the two nouns which describe this process: List \u00a0(leaf) + padati (fall).<\/p>\n

Other (archaic) names for listopad: Miholj\u0161\u010dak, ko\u017eaprst, desetnik.<\/p>\n

Studeni (November)<\/strong><\/span>

<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n

At this time of year temperatures can drop below zero in some parts of Croatia. Studen = cold<\/em> and that is how \u2018studeni\u2019 got its name.<\/p>\n

Other (archaic) names for listopad: \u00a0vsesvet\u010dak , veternjak, zmi\u0161\u010dak.<\/p>\n

Prosinac (December)<\/strong><\/span>

<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n

There are two theories about the origin of this name. One says that the name prosinac comes from the word \u2018prositi\u2019 (to beg). The other one says that the name is derived from the word \u2018prosinuti\u2019 (to shine) because the sun suddenly shines through during the winter solstice.<\/p>\n
